Camp Blood Brothers and Sisters began in 1981 and is currently the oldest as well as one of the largest camping and outreach programs for children affected by hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. Camp is a safe haven for children where they can enjoy a fun, memorable experience with others their age, while learning more about their condition.

The first summer camp at Little Green Valley Camp in 1980 was held at Big Bear, California, followed by Camp Arbolado from the mid 80s-early 90s, Camp Edwards from ’94-’95, Camp Conrad-Chinnock from ’96-‘03, and beginning in 2004, the Hemophilia Foundation partnered with Paul Newman’s Camp Painted Turtle. The staff at Camp Painted Turtle are all trained about bleeding disorders and many of the volunteers are past campers with hemophilia. There is a medical team on duty 24 hours a day, who are specifically trained in hemophilia care. With their friendly staff and fun activities, campers are able to truly enjoy the experiences that camp provides.

Camp provides a place each summer for children to feel and be normal, with increased opportunities to emphasize what they can do rather than what they cannot do. Through this summer program, campers experience a more therapeutic approach designed to build self-esteem and confidence as prerequisites for behavior changes that positively impact their health and well-being. Every aspect of the camp experience is strategically planned and incorporate a developmental approach.
